The Hector H. Henry Greenway-Riverwalk in Concord has been recognized as one of North Carolina's top multimodal transportation projects by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) at the 2022 Mobi Awards. These awards highlight projects that enhance community life and economic growth across the state.
The greenway, a popular feature in Concord, stretches 6,850 feet and offers pedestrian and bicycle access to various amenities including neighborhoods, parks, public transport, shops, restaurants, and hotels. It follows the Rocky River's northern shore and crosses over 3,000 feet of wetlands via a wooden boardwalk. The trail includes a shelter, an outdoor classroom, and an observation deck.
Unique in its execution, the project was entirely managed by City of Concord employees from conception to inspection. This approach resulted in significant cost savings for the city.
Mayor Bill Dusch stated: “As a city committed to high performance living, it is our goal to create the best quality of place for residents to live and visitors to enjoy.” He added that receiving this honor is "a testament to the talented and hard-working employees at the city who are turning our vision into reality; creating spaces that bring people together and offer safe and accessible connections to the places they want to go."
The Hector H. Henry Greenway-Riverwalk was among 12 finalists competing in the large urban area category for communities with populations over 100,000. While it received honorable mention, Charlotte’s CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar project won first place in this category. Over 30 transportation projects from 27 municipalities competed across six categories at the awards.
This marks Concord's second recognition at these awards; in 2019, their Concord Kannapolis Area Transit (Rider Transit) earned honorable mention in the Tourism category for its Concord Charlotte Express (CCX) Route.
