City of Albemarle issued the following announcement on Dec. 20.

City of Albemarle City Manager Michael Ferris announces the hiring of T. Pierre Brewton as the City’s new Fire Chief. Chief Brewton will begin his duties for the City on January 21 and fills the vacancy created when Fire Chief Shawn Oke retired.

Chief Brewton comes to the City of Albemarle from the City of Spartanburg (SC) Fire Department with over 30 years of experience. He rose through the ranks from entry level firefighter to reach second in command, becoming the highest-ranking minority within the Spartanburg Fire Department. During his tenure, Brewton has assisted the City of Spartanburg in establishing a progressive, proactive, effective, and efficient All-Hazards/All-Risk Customer Service-based Department. Chief Brewton has also assisted the department with obtaining national fire accreditation and achieving a national insurance ranking of class 1. This ranks the organization in the top 1% of all Fire Departments in the nation. Chief Brewton has significant command experience, serving as the incident commander for the Type III Upstate Incident Management Team responding to State and Federal disasters.

Brewton graduated from Limestone College and is completing his Masters’ Degree in Human Resource Management from Western Governor’s University. Chief Brewton holds National certifications as both a National Health and Safety Officer and Chief Fire Officer. He was the first to accomplish this within his department. He is currently completing the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program. Chief Brewton is passionate about creating a positive environment and community focused on diversity, inclusivity, and equity. He was appointed to the International Association of Fire Chief’s Human Relations Committee and to the State of South Carolina’s Diversity Task Force. These organizations are dedicated to creating equality and inclusivity for all people throughout the fire service.

His joy is spending quality time with his family. He credits his family with keeping him well rounded, grounded, and focused.

Chief Brewton was selected after an extensive search and review process that included assessors from the fire service profession and individuals from the Albemarle community. City Manager Michael Ferris said “We are excited to have Chief Brewton coming on-board and joining our organization. Not only does he have significant fire experience, but he has demonstrated the skills needed to help the Albemarle Fire Department continue to grow and to be a contributing and valued member of our organization and community. We are in the midst of many exciting projects as a City and within the Fire Department and look forward to his start date.”
