A new report by the National Conference of State Legislatures shows North Carolina lawmakers receive an annual base salary of $13,951, plus 29 cents a mile for travel expenses.
They also get per-diem payments of $104 per day during legislative sessions, according to the report, posted on TheCenterSquare.com.
Lawmaker salaries are determined by statute, legislatures or compensation commissions, according to the NCSL, which gathers information annually on state lawmaker pay and per diems in the 50 states.
Along with this compensation, legislators can also receive retirement and insurance benefits, plus allowances for office and staffing.
California has among the highest compensation packages in the country for its state lawmakers, with $110,459 in base salary, 53 cents a mile for travel, and a session per diem rate of $201 per day.
At the other end of the spectrum, New Hampshire pays state lawmakers $200 per two-year term, variable mileage based on distance, and no per diem payments.
