The City of Concord is collaborating with community organizations to find innovative solutions for revitalizing a key area between Western Concord and historic Downtown Concord. The city seeks input from residents to guide the redevelopment of properties recently acquired on McGill Avenue. The focus is on addressing the need for better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Concord has purchased several properties on McGill Avenue, located in the Gibson Village community, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a food desert. To improve food access, the city is considering options such as establishing a food hub or market to provide local produce. This initiative aims to lower barriers to fresh foods and promote healthy lifestyles among residents.
In partnership with community groups, Concord is also evaluating the possibility of creating a business training area. This would support local talent development in the food and beverage industry, aiding residents interested in starting their own markets or restaurants and helping existing small businesses expand.
Residents are encouraged to participate in "Reimagine McGill" by completing an online survey available until Friday, November 24. Feedback will be used to guide decisions for positive change and redevelopment on McGill Avenue.
The survey can be accessed in English at https://publicinput.com/McGill and in Spanish at https://publicinput.com/McGillEspanol. For further information, residents can contact the City of Concord Planning and Neighborhood Development Department at 704-920-5152.
