The Concord City Council and Mayor William C. "Bill" Dusch recently honored retired Electric Systems Director Robert "Bob" Pate, Jr. with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine during their October meeting. This accolade is recognized as the highest award for public service by the Office of the Governor.

Mayor Bill Dusch highlighted the significance of this honor by mentioning notable past recipients, stating, “North Carolina Governors have bestowed their highest praise and grateful appreciation upon citizens of our state by conferring upon them this special award. Among recipients of the award are names like Andy Griffith, Bill Friday, Reverend Billy Graham, Maya Angelou, Dale Earnhardt, Michael Jordan, General Henry Hugh Shelton, and Bob Timberlake. We are now proud to see one of our own being honored among these North Carolina notables.”

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is given to individuals who have provided exemplary service to North Carolina and their communities beyond normal expectations and who have made a significant impact on strengthening the state.

City Manager Lloyd Payne commented on Pate's contributions: “Bob was an instrumental member of Team Concord for over 37 years. His in-depth knowledge and experience in public power is exemplified in the State’s highest honor.”

Pate's journey began in Concord where he was born and raised before attending Tusculum College in Tennessee. He joined the City of Concord in 1984 and served as director of its Electric Systems for 12 years until his retirement on April 1, 2021. During his tenure, Pate played a crucial role during natural disasters such as Hurricane Hugo and navigated challenging financial times for the city's Electric Systems. His leadership contributed to maintaining low rates and exceptional customer service.

Reflecting on receiving this recognition, Pate expressed humility: “I am very humbled by this recognition for just trying to do the best job possible for the town I grew up in. The real recognition should go to my coworkers in the electric department, city directors, city management, and the City Council and Mayor who have supported me over 37 years of employment with the city.”

In addition to this honor, Pate also received ElectriCities of North Carolina's 2021 Public Power Distinguished Service Award. This award acknowledges leaders with at least a decade of experience who demonstrate exceptional leadership and dedication to public power while inspiring improvements within their organizations.
