Over the weekend the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument on Cabarrus Avenue was vandalized. The Concord Police Department is currently investigating, and city crews are working to restore the monument.

“The Martin Luther King Jr. Monument is a symbol of hope and justice, and the desecration of this cherished memorial has no place in our city,” said Mayor Bill Dusch. “The Concord Police Department is working to catch whoever is responsible and we implore anyone with information to contact police.”

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, at approximately 11:34 p.m. the Concord Police Department received a report of vandalism at the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument on Cabarrus Avenue. An unknown individual or group of individuals spray painted the monument.

The monument is owned and maintained by the City of Concord. The City’s Buildings and Grounds Department worked through the night Saturday to clean the monument. While crews were able to remove the paint from the polished granite surfaces, additional work is needed on the natural granite surfaces. As a result, the monument is currently covered and protected until cleaning and restoration is completed.

Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to call the Concord Police Department at 704-920-5000, or to remain anonymous call the Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-93-CRIME.
