A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Cabarrus County Election Department on October 30, 2024. The request, made by us at Cabarrus Today, sought detailed information regarding the pre-election testing of voting machines.
In our pursuit of comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we asked for specific details about the voting machines used in the upcoming elections. We requested records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., preferably in an electronic format.
The specifics we asked for included the date of testing, machine manufacture details, machine model numbers, and their respective status indicating whether they passed or failed during testing. We asked for this information to be provided in a PDF format.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such records is crucial for us. We believe that this information will help us fulfill our professional responsibilities more effectively.
We also mentioned our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating important information to the public.
Our commitment remains steadfast towards delivering comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs and ensuring that public institutions maintain transparency with their operations.
