The City of Concord has been recognized as one of the nation's leading "boomtowns" in a recent study by SmartAsset. The city tied with New Braunfels, Texas for the 14th position, achieving a score of 89.83, making it the highest-ranked city in North Carolina.
SmartAsset's study analyzed data from the 500 largest cities across the United States to determine the fastest-growing cities or "boomtowns." Cities were evaluated based on seven metrics: population change, unemployment rate, change in unemployment rate, GDP growth rate, business growth, housing growth, and change in household income.
This recognition follows Concord's recent entry into North Carolina's Top 10 most populous cities list according to the latest U.S. census data. Additionally, a significant economic development was announced with a new beverage manufacturing hub set to open at The Grounds at Concord. This project represents a $1 billion investment and will create over 600 jobs with wages above the county average. Furthermore, ongoing work on the Novi Projects includes three new residential and mixed-use properties that represent approximately $70 million in private investment in Downtown Concord.
As growth continues across Concord, city officials are working to plan responsibly for further expansion and increased service demands. Recent developments include breaking ground on a new Electric Systems Operations Center and commissioning an electric substation and delivery—the first since 1997—known as Substation P and Delivery 6. These projects aim to relieve capacity constraints and support commercial and residential growth along the Hwy 49 corridor from US 601 to Cabarrus Arena.
Concord maintains its low tax rate of 48 cents per $100 valuation—a rate unchanged since 2013—while focusing on enhancing public parks, greenways, transportation infrastructure, and expanding affordable housing options to accommodate its growing population.
Additionally, last month SafeWise recognized Concord as one of North Carolina's safest cities.
