City Manager Lloyd Payne has announced the appointment of Emma Sellers as the City of Concord's first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Coordinator. Sellers is tasked with collaborating with city leadership and community stakeholders to promote DEI values within the organization and across the community.

Sellers emphasized the importance of inclusion in both external and internal practices, stating, "As our region and our city continue to become more diverse in its people and groups, being intentional about inclusion in our external and internal practices ensures that we will remain a viable city for our employees and our citizens." She expressed her eagerness to work with city leaders towards an inclusive community where everyone is valued regardless of their background.

In her new role, Sellers will also act as a liaison to the Concord United Committee. This committee was established by the City Council in February to investigate racial inequities within city departments, programs, policies, and procedures. The committee has been given a year to report its findings and recommendations back to the Council. During a council meeting on May 13, 24 individuals were unanimously approved by the City Council to serve on this committee.

Payne expressed his enthusiasm for Sellers joining Team Concord: "Emma comes to Concord with extensive knowledge and a passion for equal access and opportunity for all persons. I am excited to welcome her where she will be a crucial leader for our internal diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts."

Before joining Concord, Sellers served as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Lenoir-Rhyne University for ten years. She played a significant role in increasing minority recruitment and retention at the university while developing inclusive curriculum initiatives. Her efforts have earned her recognition as one of Greater Hickory Metro’s “Top 20 Under 40.”

Originally from South Carolina, Sellers currently resides in Charlotte, NC with her St. Bernard named Sir Winston.
