The City of Concord has opened applications for the 2023 Concord 101 course, an educational program aimed at helping citizens understand their local government. The free 14-week class will start in August and end with a graduation ceremony in November. Residents of Concord who are 18 years or older are encouraged to apply early due to limited space.
Now entering its 22nd year, the Concord 101 program offers residents insight into their local government and city services. Throughout the course, participants will meet members of the City Council, city management, and staff from various city departments. They will also tour city facilities to learn about operations such as transportation, electric, water, sewer, police, fire, parks and recreation.
As one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the state, participants will hear from city leaders and community partners about how Concord is managing growth and economic development. The course will also address issues like homelessness and affordable housing.
The city hopes that by learning more about Concord through this program, participants will be inspired to become more active in their neighborhoods and community. Notably, Council Members Andy Langford, Betty Stocks, Jennifer P. Hubbard, and John Sweat Jr. are alumni of Concord 101.
Classes take place weekly on Tuesdays with two sessions available: an afternoon class from 2-4:15 p.m., and an evening class from 6:15-8:30 p.m., each accommodating up to 30 participants. Interested residents should apply by August 1, 2023.
Further details and application forms can be found at concordnc.gov/Concord101. Paper applications are available at the City Manager’s Office on the third floor of City Hall at 35 Cabarrus Ave W. For inquiries, residents may contact the City Manager’s Office at 704-920-5215.
