Work on the Downtown Streetscape project in Concord is progressing as contractors prepare to start utility work on Union Street. The section of Union Street between Cabarrus Avenue and Corban Avenue will be closed to through traffic starting February 22. This closure is expected to last until Summer 2023.
The project experienced a longer delay than anticipated due to unforeseen utility conflicts. However, construction resumed earlier this year on Barbrick Avenue, where crews are installing new 42-inch stormwater drainage pipes. With progress made there, the contractor is ready to begin work on Union Street.
Construction fencing will be placed along Union Street from Corban Avenue to the midblock crosswalk, with road closures beginning around 5 p.m. on February 22. This phase of construction will focus on updating infrastructure with new water lines and stormwater drainage pipes to support downtown's growth and development.
Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrian access to businesses during construction, and free parking is available throughout downtown. Visitors can find a Downtown Parking map at concorddowntown.com/parking.
