Google Fiber is set to expand its high-speed internet services to Concord, North Carolina. This development makes Concord one of eight cities in the state to receive Google Fiber, joining other locations such as Charlotte and communities in the Triangle.

Concord has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with a 33% increase in population according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The city is now among the top ten most populous cities in North Carolina. City officials attribute this growth to a strategic vision focused on enhancing residents' quality of life.

The introduction of Google Fiber is seen as an essential step toward achieving this vision by providing high-speed broadband internet access. This service aims to attract future job opportunities and foster a thriving community that supports diverse work environments, online learning, and telehealth services.

City Manager Lloyd Payne expressed enthusiasm about the new possibilities that Google Fiber will bring: “Google Fiber in Concord is a game changer,” he stated. “I’m excited for the many new opportunities ahead for families and businesses, and the positive ripple effects on our continued growth and economic development.”

Efforts are underway between City Council members, city leaders, and Google Fiber representatives to enhance digital equity across Concord. The goal is to build an extensive network that reaches as many residents as possible throughout various neighborhoods.

Jess George, Government & Community Affairs Manager for Google Fiber NC, emphasized the importance of reliable internet access: “Access to fast, reliable internet service is necessary to everyone in the 21st century," she said. "We are looking forward to serving the residents of Concord.”

Construction has already commenced with plans for completion by late 2022. Once finished, Google Fiber will offer both one gigabit and two gigabit internet service options.
