Locust Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 11.
Due to consistent residential complaints of vehicles traveling at excessive speeds inside Locust city limits on Bethel Church Road and Elm Street, two of our speed monitoring signs were installed along these roadways and are active as of today.
Our department has always been aware that Bethel Church and Elm Street are roadways where excessive speeding does occur, and our officers have routinely conducted speed enforcement there through the years. Because the level of traffic is much less than on Hwy 24/27 and Hwy 200 however, it has made it more difficult for our officers to know the most productive times to conduct enforcement there.
As part of our speed monitoring program, over the next few weeks the Locust Police Department will collect speed data from the signs that will be analyzed to assess speed patterns on the streets, volume of excessive speeds, and the time periods that excessive speeds are most prevalent.
Locust officers WILL be conducting speed enforcement daily on Bethel Church Road and Elm Street utilizing in-car RADAR units and hand-held LIDAR units.
The posted speed limit on Bethel Church Road is 45 mph and on Elm Street is 35 mph. The Locust Police Department is asking all residents and travelers in these area to please travel as close to the posted speed limit as possible. If your speed on Bethel Church Road or Elm Street is clocked and considered excessive by our officers, you will be issued a citation.
If you have any questions about the Locust Police Department Speed Monitoring Program or you live in an area of Locust where you believe one of our speed monitoring signs is needed, please let us know. If you have previously commented or sent messages about specific areas, that area has already been added to our waiting list.
As always, the Locust Police Department is honored and privileged to serve you and keep you safe!
