State Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) and state House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) want a presidential debate to take place in North Carolina in early Septemeber.
The letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates in Washington, D.C., which state Sen. Carl Ford (R-Rowan) posted to his personal Facebook page on Aug. 7, stated that the fact North Carolina voters will cast their presidential election ballots before other states make it imperative that they have the opportunity to hear from both candidates.
“Unlike television ads or pre-written speeches, debates give Americans a firsthand look at each candidates’ own policies and intellect in an unscripted setting,” the letter from Moore and Berger reads. “They allow voters to hear the candidates’ platforms firsthand and give candidates the opportunity to respond to the tough questions.”
Moore and Berger state that having a presidential debate hosted in North Carolina will help to “preserve fairness and transparency."
President Trump and former Vice President Joseph Biden have agreed to three presidential debates.
