Businesses advocacy groups and employers in Rowan and Cabarrus counties are helping families find child-care options as North Carolina schools prepare to reopen in mid-August.
“There are many jobs that you simply can’t do from home,” James Meacham, chief executive officer of Rowan County Tourism, told WBTV. “For the community to strike that balance of virtual learning, in-school learning, but also being able to go to work and provide for your family is a critical thing for Rowan County and for the state of North Carolina.”
This is the situation for many families in the counties.
The Rowan County Tourism, the Rowan Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Commission are addressing the problem by finding ways children can be educated, whether in-person or online, while parents work jobs that can't be done from home.
To help parents, the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA has been transforming its rooms into classrooms for children. Parents will be able to drop their children off for school, where they can be sure safety precautions are being taken while students complete their remote learning.
“Families do need to provide for themselves. They need to be able to go to work. They need to support their families … the old adage put food on the table and educate children at the same time … so we’re trying to provide as man resources in one place, find information that’s available, share that and then spread it around the community,” Meacham told WBTV.
