County of Cabarrus issued the following announcement on Sept. 13.
N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will soon start building a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 3 and Odell School Road. The $990,000 project was awarded earlier this spring to NJR Group Inc. out of Albemarle.
The intersection is scheduled to close Monday morning so crews can safely build the roundabout. The contract calls for the intersection to open by the end of October. Drivers will follow a posted detour during construction along Windy Road, N.C. 3 and Earnhardt Lake Road, returning to N.C. 3.
According to the NCDOT, roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.
