The City of Concord announced on April 25 that the boil water notice affecting a small portion of its customers in areas north of Interstate 85 and North Carolina Highway 73 has been lifted. Water quality tests have confirmed that drinking water provided by the City of Kannapolis system is now safe for all uses, and customers are no longer required to boil their water before use or consumption.

The decision to lift the notice means impacted businesses in the affected area may reopen, provided they follow health and safety guidelines from the Cabarrus Health Alliance. The boil water notice had only applied to 419 out of Concord’s approximately 46,000 total water customers. All other residents were not affected by this advisory.

Customers are advised to take several steps before resuming normal use of their household water systems. These include flushing all faucets for at least fifteen minutes, discarding ice made during the advisory period, cycling ice makers or dispensers three times before use, sanitizing ice reservoirs, running dishwashers empty on a hot cycle, flushing refrigerator lines, replacing all filter cartridges, and running showers and washing machines on hot settings.

According to the City of Kannapolis: “A small area of the City was initially impacted. Contaminants that cause E. coli were found during regular testing procedures. Flushing of the waterlines of this area was completed. Although we believed that any negative impacts had been mitigated, the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) required that we issue the citywide boil notice.”

City services in Concord include utility management as well as emergency response and infrastructure maintenance according to its official website. The city also operates facilities such as an airport and multiple fire stations according to its official website.
