The City of Concord has announced plans for its 28th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and the 97th Concord Christmas Parade, scheduled for November 21 and 22, respectively. The events are set to take place in downtown Concord and are open to the public.

The tree lighting ceremony, presented by Eli Lilly, will be held on Friday, November 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Organizers describe it as a free event with musical performances, a kids’ zone, food trucks, and a screening of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch. Santa Land, sponsored by Windstream and Uwharrie Bank, will offer photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display.

A highlight of the tree lighting is the illuminated City vehicle display competition. City departments compete by decorating various vehicles—including garbage trucks and utility vehicles—with holiday lights. Attendees can vote for their favorite display during the event.

The following day marks the return of the Concord Christmas Parade at 2:30 p.m., which organizers say is North Carolina’s longest running historic downtown parade. According to city officials, “The Concord Christmas Parade is a time-honored tradition that brings together over 20,000 residents and visitors to enjoy the magic of the season and catch Santa on his sleigh as he makes his way to Downtown Concord.”

This year’s parade route starts at Church Street N and Lake Concord Road before continuing along Church Street, Buffalo Avenue, and Union Street; it ends at Union Street and Corban Avenue. The judges’ stage will be located on Union Street across from the historic courthouse.

Sponsorships are available for both events, and registration for parade participants is now open online at https://concordnc.gov/Christmas.

Bands, schools, churches, and civic organizations participating in the parade may compete for awards in four categories judged by a panel. First through third place prizes will be awarded in each category.
