The City of Concord announced on Apr. 17 that it is encouraging all water customers to voluntarily reduce their water use due to ongoing extreme drought conditions in the region and a significant drop in Lake Howell’s water level.

This request comes as both the City of Concord and Cabarrus County have been identified as experiencing an extreme drought, with Lake Howell currently reported at 11 inches below full. Officials say these dry conditions may lead to further mandatory restrictions if the situation worsens.

Residents are being asked to take several steps to conserve water, such as checking for leaks in toilets and faucets, taking shorter showers, running only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines, turning off taps while brushing teeth or shaving, and watering lawns during cooler parts of the day. The city also recommends using commercial car washes that recycle water instead of washing vehicles at home. Customers are encouraged to optimize irrigation systems and consider limiting irrigation days.

The City of Concord operates facilities including an airport and multiple fire stations, according to the official website. It also delivers services like utility management, emergency response, and infrastructure maintenance according to the official website.

Customers can monitor current drought conditions through resources provided by the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council at https://www.ncdrought.org/. Officials caution that additional mandatory restrictions could be implemented if dry weather persists.
